Set in an acre of grounds in an old renovated farmhouse near the town of Skibbereen, Stereo Not Mono combines a residential recording studio, creative production services and record label, supporting an organic, in-house approach to recording and releasing music.
After collaborating to score a soundtrack for the documentary ‘Lines From The Sea’, Steve Hunt and Harry Christensen began working together in 2014 out of Steve’s then bedroom studio in North Devon (which for a time amazingly housed the Allen & Heath GS3000 desk that lives in the studio control room today). Although a generation apart the two found much common ground in their love of music and surfing, and soon began working on songs together outside of the documentary. Initially set up as a vehicle to release the duo’s first recorded material together as Bonneville Sound, as well as Harry’s solo work ‘Luna’, Stereo Not Mono naturally grew into its own identity when Steve and partner Bernie relocated to the remote and stunning landscape of West Cork in 2018.
Both Steve and Harry will proudly affirm that they are not confined to particular genres, with a wide range of influences spanning 70’s jazz, soul and folk to contemporary indie, electronica and hip-hop. At the heart it’s about striving to make honest, soulful music, regardless of which box it may be put in by others down the line. This ethos also feeds into the technical side of recording at Stereo Not Mono, where the studio has a wonderful hybrid of analogue and digital gear, yet there are certainly no right or wrong recording techniques to live by. Each artist and each track is unique; it’s just about having a relaxed, open mind and doing what feels right in the moment to capture that particular emotion.
Our philosophy and in-house set up is inspired by the likes of Daptone and Big Crown Records, set in the heart of West Cork with an amazing group of Irish musicians always on hand to bring that bit of magic to a session. All our label artists use the studio as a base to write/record/mix – other artists looking for a creative residential space to make music have loved their stay with us, whether for a day or a week.
Previous studio clients include: The Ocelots; Ainm; Bonneville Sound; Most Akin; Harry Christensen; Seadog Conspiracy
With an eclectic mix of styles and talent, Stereo Not Mono Records are always on the lookout for something just a little different… If you would like to work with us on your next project, use the studio or simply want a chat, send us an email:
